The following is an article that was in the Lehi Area Chamber Dispatch that talks about the community meetings that were held recently. There is also an online survey available to each household at http://planlehi.wordpress.com/ to give feedback and input as to what we want developed in our area. We would HIGHLY suggest that each family fill out the survey, as one of the questions is about how people feel about putting high density housing (ie. apartments) near us and the Trax station.
Plan Lehi program looking ahead
Lehi City is reviewing and updating its Land Use Plan which then becomes the basis for the General Plan for the city's future development. Every new road, building, and house will be affected by the changes taking place this year in the plan. We felt like it was a good time to take a look at the comprehensive General Plan for the city, said Kim Struthers, planning director for Lehi City.
The first step in planning for the city is getting public input. An online survey has been available for residents through the city website and can still be filled out. Between the online survey at http://planlehi.wordpress.com/ and the paper copies at City Hall, nearly 500 of the 13,000 households in the city have responded. For surveys of this kind, Struthers says he is happy with the response.
Placement of the next big box superstore, subdivisions, wildlife preserve, utilities, and roads are all decided based on the Land Use Plan--the basis for the General Plan.
The Land Use Plan becomes the template for any zone changes. Actually, it's one of the most important elements of the General Plan. It's pretty key to a city's future, said Struthers.
There haven't been many surprises amid the public responses. Not all of the data is in, but Struthers explained that most of the surveys show that people like the sense of community in Lehi and the small-town feel. There has been quite a lot of comment on a downtown revitalization and preserving open spaces along the Jordan River.
From this point, the planning department will present results of the public input to the Planning Commission. A joint work session with the City Council is scheduled for May, followed by designs and a public open house on the drafted Land Use maps. The adoption of the new Land Use map is expected to be in early Fall.
